Organizations Representing ActuariesAmerican Academy of Actuaries
(AAA) The Academy is a professional membership, public policy, and communications organization for all actuaries practicing in the United States, regardless of specialty. The Academy also establishes qualification standards for making public statements of actuarial opinion. Professional standards of practice and discipline procedures are the responsibility of the Actuarial Standard Board and the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline, respectively. Both are independent entities within the Academy. The American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) ASPPA is a professional membership organization designed to educate actuaries, consultants, and other benefit professionals in the pension field and to preserve and enhance the private pension system. It administers a series of examinations leading to Membership and then Fellowship. A continuing education program is also available through seminars, conferences, and involvement in the organization. (CIA) The CIA is a professional membership organization for all actuaries practicing in Canada. Fellowship in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries is recognized as the qualification needed to perform actions required of an actuary under Canadian federal and provincial legislation. The Institute serves the public by commenting on issues having actuarial significance. It establishes education and professional standards for its members; operates a review and disciplinary system; maintains liaison with government authorities, external actuarial bodies and other professions and organizations; and promotes actuarial research. Educational requirements for Fellowship set by the CIA currently may be met through examinations administered by the SOA or CAS, some of which are specifically Canadian. Casualty Actuarial Society
(CAS) The Casualty Actuarial Society, founded in 1914, is an international professional organization with the purpose of advancing the body of knowledge of actuarial science as applied to property, casualty, and similar risk exposures. This is accomplished through communication with the publics affected by insurance, by the presentation and discussion of papers, attendance at seminars and workshops, collection of a library, sponsorship of research programs, and other means. A primary objective for the CAS is establishing and maintaining high standards of qualification, conduct, and competence for its membership. The CAS administers a series of examinations leading to Associateship and then to Fellowship. A continuing education program is available through seminars and membership meetings. There are 13 regional affiliates (local actuarial clubs) in the U.S. and Canada, and one each in Asia, Europe, and Bermuda. Colegio Nacional de Actuarios (CONAC) CONAC is a professional membership, government-advising, and independent organization for all the actuaries licensed to practice in Mexico, regardless of their specialty area. Mexican authorities recognize the CONAC as the official representative of the actuarial profession. CONAC is an advisor to the government in matters such as social security, regulation of the insurance system, and management of contingent liabilities. CONAC sponsors an annual National Meeting of Actuaries, where topics of general interest for actuaries are discussed, and a research-oriented congress that focuses exclusively on technical issues. Actuaries (CCA) The CCA is a professional membership organization for actuaries working as consultants in life, health, property, and casualty insurance and in the pension planning and employee benefits fields. Continuing education geared toward the consulting field is provided through membership meetings. Society of Actuaries (SOA) The Society of Actuaries is an international research, education, and membership organization for actuaries who practice in the life and health insurance, pension, employee benefits, finance, and investment fields. It administers examinations leading to the professional designations of Associate and Fellow. A continuing education program is offered through seminars, symposia, and membership meetings. Founded in 1949, the SOA has more than 16,000 members, most of them in Canada and the United States. A growing number of members in Asia are served by a satellite office in Hong Kong. The SOA is governed by an elected Board of Governors. Supporting its work are more than 2,000 members who volunteer their time and expertise on committees, task forces, and in 15 special interest Sections. |
